London’s Graffik Gallery in Portobello Road is establishing itself as the new shrine for the best breed of British urban artists, offering a rejuvenated exhibition space to accommodate street art shows for the current and new wave generation of graffiti spraying wizards. It is on a mission to provide a new and alternative environment for exhibiting art to the traditional gallery format, transforming static work into multi-media and performance-oriented events. In 2011 it will open two exciting new sections for visitors: an “Arts Cellar” and - in time for the summer - a re-design of the “Painting Garden”.
Graffik Gallery will kick off 2011 with the exclusive “Corroded Surfaces” show hosted by the infamous “Grafik Warfare” collective from Thursday 3rd March until Sunday 20th March 2011. This “Heavy metal Attitude” will bring to life unique corroded objects sourced from decaying landmark British industrial sites, which will challenge, stimulate and YES, be full of steel! It will also promote British Street arts engaging with a “Never Say Die” re-use and recycle message countering some popular beliefs.
For the “Corroded Surfaces” event the “Grafik Warfare” crew scoured industrial sites such as mills, scrap heaps and empty warehouses to source their “metallic canvasses” and materials. Objects used include an ancient industrial saw, a road sign chucked in a bush years ago, a kitchen tabletop used by a family everyday, now decaying down a back alley, a skateboard too old to use but once loved and treasured, all with history and now rediscovered and turned into artworks.
The Grafik Warfare collective include some of the most recognised names in Urban Arts alongside a selection of some of the hottest up-and-coming talent around. It will be the second time that this awesome Street Arts Syndicate will host a show following last years’ successful “Hazardous Waste” exhibition. The artists transformed the gallery space into a toxic waste dump incorporating artwork from all the crew including original canvas pieces, limited edition prints, black book sketches as well as boundary pushing mediums and installations typically associated with this unique collective.
The promoter and founder of Grafik Warfare, known by his artist name “SNUB23”, will style the gallery for this event transforming it into an “industrial street look”. This purposely designed Urban art installation space will take over from the ‘White walled’ traditional gallery look and will allow visitors to deeply engage with the “Corroded Surfaces” show and will amplify the talent of the “Grafik Warfare” artists.
“Most galleries offer big spacious white walls, harsh and intense lighting, like some kind of art supermarket. The artists never created their work to fit in this environment; we plan to show the work how the artists intended” says SNUB23 (founder and promoter of the Grafik Warfare Collective)
“We all have an impact on the Earth - an ecological footprint left behind by our activities and consumption habits. This Corroded Surfaces event demonstrates that Graffiti lends itself to reward environmentally responsible practices, discourage waste, help close the recycling loop and reduce the amount of toxic materials entering our ecosystems say Ollie (Gallery Curator) and Franco (Sponsorship, Press & PR)
Schedule: Thursday 3rd March Private View - Artists, Press, Buyers, Sponsors, Friends and Family (Drinks Reception and live painting in the garden) Friday 4th March - Sunday March 20th – Exhibition Open to the Public
